A staple of rental car fleets across America, the current-generation Chevy Impala is anything but an object of desire. But with the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala making its world debut at the 2012 New York auto show, the Bow Tie brand is promising to erase memories of the long-running nameplate’s largely forgettable outgoing model with a more refined interior, the latest in technology, and a vastly improved driving experience when it goes on sale in early 2013.

The 10th-generation Impala is based on a stretched version of GM’s Epsilon II platform, which also underpins the Cadillac XTS and Buick LaCrosse. The car will be offered exclusively in front-wheel drive, and offer three engines to pair with a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Those direct-injection engines include a 2.4-liter I-4 with eAssist mild hybrid technology, estimated to produce 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque; a 2.5-liter Ecotec I-4 estimated at 195 hp and 187 lb-ft; and the familiar 3.6-liter V-6 producing 303 hp and 264 lb-ft. Those numbers are up slightly from the 3.6-liter engine in the current Impala, which produces 300 hp and 262 lb-ft. The General expects the 2.4-liter eAssist model to be EPA-rated at 35 mpg on the highway. The platform-mate LaCrosse eAssist is rated at 25/36 mpg city/highway – expect similar numbers from the 2014 Impala.

Three powertrain possibilities
Depending on your budget and desires, the Imapala can be had with one of three engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder with eAssist, a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter V6. The 2.4-liter Ecotec engine is good for 182 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque, followed by 195 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque for the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which is then topped by the 303 horsepower, 264 lb-ft of torque 3.6-liter VVT engine with direction injection.
All three engines come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and drives the front wheels. Fuel economy is expected to come in at 35 highway with eAssist, 31 highway with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, and 18 city, 30 highway with the range-topping V6.

 With this glimpse inside the next Impala, we’re thrilled to see the days of GM’s pathetic grayscale cabin are (hopefully permanently) behind us. Likely a loaded LTZ model, this mule has a French-stitched dash with a large infotainment screen serving as its focal point. The touch-screen display will run the latest version of Chevy’s MyLink services. The 2012 BMW 3 Series is a mid-size executive car built since 1975 and is currently in its fifth generation. It’s BMW’s most popular model to date and for years has been the benchmark for rivals to match in the executive class. Today the car is available in Sedan, Coupe, Convertible and Touring wagon bodystyles, as well as a high-performance M3 guise.

While overseas the BMW 3-Series is available with a range of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel units, in the U.S. the base model comes with a six-cylinder gasoline unit. Space in the 3-Series is adequate for four adults, although a fifth can be squeezed in should the need arrive. Pricing in this segment is very competitive, with the 3-Series starting from $33,150. This puts it on par with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which starts at $33,600 and Infiniti G37 at $33,250. Another rival, the Audi A4 starts at just $31,450, but its base model only comes with a four-cylinder engine.

The first generation 3-Series, the E21, was launched in 1975 but didn’t arrive in the U.S. until 1977. It served as the replacement for the 2002 and was originally only available as a two-door and with four-cylinder engines. The first BMW straight-six in the 3-Series didn’t arrive until 1977.

 Driver aid Dynamic Stability Control will help you keep out of trouble, while six airbags will help you out if you don’t. Run-flat tyres will do exactly what they say on the tin to enable you to travel up to 150 miles at 50mph should your car suffer a puncture. The 3-series also benefits from BMW’s Active Steering which, in the event of understeer being detected, corrects the car. It achieved a full five star rating following its EuroNCAP crash test.

Air conditioning, CD player, foglights, onboard control, keyless entry and Start/Stop button control all come as standard. The model we drove also features sports suspension, shortened gearshift, illuminated door handles , cruise control, rear parking sensors and superb sports seats.

 Aston Martin has a few line-up is classified as a car with great power and is the ultimate car for the British manufacturer. One is that DBS is a fast version of the DB9.  Although loosely based on the Virage/V8 platform, the now out-of-production Aston Martin V12 Vanquish featured thoroughly modern technology. The main body structure included aluminum sections bonded and riveted around a central carbon-fiber transmission tunnel. Carbon fiber A-pillars, all-aluminum suspension and aluminum body panels served to keep weight down, although the Vanquish still weighed in at a little more than 2 tons.


The powertrain was equally cutting-edge, with a high-performance 6.0-liter V12 engine that first made 460 horsepower, and later 520. Tasked with getting that power to the rear wheels was an automated-clutch, six-speed sequential-shift manual gearbox utilizing F1-style paddle shifters.

 By today's standards, control efforts-steering, throttle, brake-are heavy. Aston has dispensed with the awful part-plastic steering wheel of early Vanquishes-and generally tidied up the cabin. The sport seats with deep shoulder wings are excellent, and the matching hand-stitched leather trim now extends across what had been a painted-aluminum fascia centerpiece. The rest of the surroundings are a mixture of neat (cast aluminum handles and door pulls) and unworthy (switches from owner Ford, with ill-matched plastic surrounds). The next generation of Astons, exemplified by the DB9, does these things better.

Outside, you have to be an Aston expert to spot the difference between a Vanquish and a Vanquish S. The grille is wider and has more curvature, there is a splitter lip under the nose, and the trailing edge of the trunklid is flicked up to aid high-speed stability and, conveniently, to accommodate the center brake light.

The manufacturer describes this car as the fastest-ever Aston Martin. We used to describe the Vanquish as the fastest and most expensive car in the Ford firmament, but now there is the Ford GT. Our 2012 Automobile of the Year didn't earn a spot on our 2012 All-Stars list, but the Chevy Volt's powertrain is still a massively impressive piece of engineering. The Volt's key trick is a seamless transition between running on electricity and gasoline. The gas/electric drivetrain allows for roughly 35 miles of driving range using electricity stored in a large lithium-ion battery before firing up a small, four-cylinder gas engine for another 300 miles of range.
